What are you passionate about?
I'm all about the simple joys of life. That's why I love being Evie's friend and hanging out with other awesome kids. They're so passionate about all those delicious things in life that many out-of-touch, boring, modern-day folk just ignore. Like making amazing bubbles in a pool of water, scruffing on a soft blanket, watching dust dance in the air, or experimenting with all the different sounds they can make with their voices. I personally love running for hours through the woods, feeling squishy mud on my bare feet, singing like a maniac when I'm driving in my car, dancing full out and letting the energy take my body where it will, eating all natural and super yummy foods from the earth - especially in form of big green smoothies!, dressing up in silly costumes, connecting with friends and family, and simply laughing at the ridiculous awesomeness of life.
What attracted you to join Evie’s Son-Rise Program?
I watched the Son-Rise Program introductory videos, and I knew instantly that this was something I wanted to experience. When I contacted Evie's parents, asking about the chance to volunteer in Evie's program, I received such an out-of-this-world, passionate, heart-felt reply. I knew that I wanted to be around people who were so crazy (compared to the rest of the world), so passionate and loving, with the hope that they would help me add more passion and love and craziness to my own life. I wanted to do something extraordinary, and make a difference in the world. I wanted to learn more about myself, to come more fully into the person I knew I could be, and I saw this as the perfect opportunity to do just that.
How has working with Evie helped you?
My time with Evie has helped me in ways that words can't fully describe. Even if you were to step into my body and my mind, you still wouldn't experience the effect Evie and her family have had on my life. You would have to experience the lightness of my soul to understand it. Sounds dramatic, I know. And I have the tendency to think of my life as an epic adventure ... but sincerely, my experience with Evie has helped me shift in big ways. I feel so much more confident to embrace who I am, and just be me. I've learned how to love myself and other unconditionally. I feel like I can be successful in life by simply relaxing and having fun. I've gained this trust that the universe will continue to support if I just listen to myself and do what feels right. Evie has been like this little angel child, coming to me in the darkness, taking me by the hand and saying, "It's OK. Life can seem hard, but you're going to be just fine. Just live, love, and be."
In what ways are you able to help Evie?
I think everyone has their unique role to play in Evie's life. I see my role as being her big brother and friend. I'm the kind of laid back, patient friend who honors Eve's desire to relax and recharge, by giving her space when she wants it and creating a pressure-free environment for Evie to do whatever feels right to her. I listen when she communicates and enthusiastically follow Evie to wherever she wants to go. I empower Evie by giving her opportunities to learn and do things on her own; I stand back and cheer her on while she tackles new challenges, such as putting on her own shirt or working out a puzzle. I help Evie by simply being a good friend - being there to listen, to understand, to accept her no matter what, to play with, to laugh with, to give her space when she wants it, and to inspire her to learn and grow.
What is one of your favourite times you shared with Evie and why?
Oh, there are so many! One moment I will remember forever, is when Evie and I were jumping together on the trampoline at night. I imagined creating this energetic fire around us, crackling with love and excitement. Evie looked at me in the glow of the full moon, her eyes dancing with life and a big smile spread across her face. In that moment, the rest of the world fell away, and all that remained were the two of us, jumping high into the air, laughing our heads off and yelling "Woo-hoo!" into the big open sky.
Is there one personal learning that you would like to share with others?
There are so many! But I'm not going to share any, because I think the things you learn through Evie about yourself, about kids with autism, about the world, are things you just have to experience yourself. But I promise you, you will learn plenty from Evie.
What are your favourite sayings/quotes?
From Evie: "Go away, Jake!" I was so proud of her for using this three word phrase to clearly express her wants. It started with no words, and her taking me lovingly by the hand and shutting me in a closet. As time went on, I let her know that she could use her words to get what she wants, and she could say "Go away." I modeled it, and modeled it, and modeled it in many different, silly ways. I invited her to say it on many occasions. And finally she told me one day, "Go away!" Yes!!! What a joy to hear! From there I invited her to be more specific and say "Go away, Jake!" and after many tries, she came to understand that saying "Go away, Jake" would make me move away from her. She got it! To me, "Go away, Jake!" is a perfect example of the growth Evie can achieve with our belief in her and our persistence.
What is one reason that autism is a gift to you?
I see these amazing critters with special needs as a gift to the world because they remind us of what's important. I think many of us feel lost and weighed down by all the day-to-day events - the seeming complexity of life. I think these kids are here to give us a bigger perspective on life and inspire us to lighten up, to not take our lives or ourselves so seriously, and to enjoy every moment we have. I think they're here to help the world evolve into a more simple, natural, harmonious place to live. And I'm so grateful and excited about it!

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about living a life of authenticity. About leading with love. About unhindered self-expression. About keeping an open mind and an open heart. About staying unattached to ideas or beliefs. About the beauty of change. About jumping into the dark. About following my intuition. About listening deeply and sharing wholeheartedly. About being genuine and present with all that I am.
I feel to be born anew every day, every minute, every moment I am learning, changing, morphing form. I welcome the unknown while traveling the sacred journey within my own being.
What attracted you to join Evie’s Son-Rise Program?
At the time that I saw the job advertised I was reading a book about autism and its gifts to the world. I didn’t really have much experience at all with autism, but my heart was singing to that book. So when I saw the ad, it just felt right. I literally jumped up and down and ran around the house. The way Kristy described Evie and the whole program made the cells in my body ring. I heard her love humming through the pages. So many odd occurrences materialized which led me to find the job, and I just knew it was meant to be.
How has working with Evie helped you?
The Son-Rise program has taught me the most powerful lesson I have ever learnt; that every emotion is connected to a belief, that I alone am responsible for my own happiness, and that I can decide to be happy in every moment. Evie has taught me of the beauty and the sacredness of the present moment. With her as my teacher, I have learned that the present moment is a place of stillness, love and indescribable joy. I have learnt that beyond thought lives creativity, vitality, alertness, and inner connectedness. I have learnt that my true state is one of peace and joy. And I choose to reside in the ever-present ‘I am’. I have learned to love and accept myself as I am right now. And only once you have learnt these lessons, can you help Evie be her greatest version in return.
In what ways are you able to help Evie?
I help Evie find better solutions to her problems, overcome deeply grooved in patterns, and access the world around her. I help her be more purposeful in all that she does: in her behavior, her thoughts and her emotions. I am the creator of a nurturing, safe, and stimulating environment in which Evie is encouraged and able to reach her utmost potential.
What is one of your favourite times you shared with Evie and why?
One of my favouritest times to date with Evie was a few nights ago, when I rocked up and surprised her dressed in a completely blue sparkly alien costume. Evie was winding down for bed when I went into her bedroom and connected with her for half an hour before the lights went on and she realised that I was head to toe BLUE. We held hands and jumped and laughed ourselves hysterical. Evie looked up at me with complete and utter awe-mazement. It truly felt like I stepped out of time and was in this angelic Evie trance for 10 lifetimes before coming back.
What are your favourite sayings/quotes?
One quote that has changed my way of being is stuck to the back of the Toovey’s toilet door: “Every action has a consequence. Including no action, which is a form of action” – Bears Kaufman
As someone who more comfortably took no action, let opportunities slide, and didn’t put much effort into anything, not taking risks or exerting myself, letting things go when they began demanding too much of me, when I considered ‘no action’ as a form of action, I felt the power behind that decision. I understood it for the first time as a choice as genuine as any choice to make action. Now I can give myself the gift of a question, ‘why am I choosing this?’ and I can make choices that better serve what I want for myself. This slight change in perception moved me from passivity to activity. My perception of time has changed as a result; how much I have of it, how much I can do with it, and how I choose to use it. All is up to me, and I am powerful in my decisions. Now I choose to be purposeful, and to fill my days with passion and enthusiasm.
My favourite Evie quote has to be the simple, yet all common “go away”. This “go away” has taught me how to remain unflinched in my happiness and my love, to hold off on assumptions and self-judgment, to be subtle in my perceptions and observations, to unlearn a reliance on others to regulate my mood, and how to hold space with my attitude.
What is one reason that autism is a gift to you?
Those with autism are beacons of light. They bring to the surface that which was hidden in dark and dusty corners. Forgotten about, ignored or denied.
Dear Evie,
You have pulled to the light many things that needed to be worked on within me, and continue to work deeper and deeper within my being. You have shown me how to live as my authentic self, without the burdens of judgment or shame. You have taught me a purity of love I was yet to grasp. Thanks to you I have cleaned my mirrors, so that light can shine down onto them and freely out into the world. For all of these lessons and more, I will be eternally grateful. Love everlastingly, Rikki.

What are you passionate about?
Passion??? What gets me up in the morning? Moving forward – always moving forward. Knowing what is, is not to be, it is up to me! Believing and knowing what Eve does today has nothing to do with what she will be doing tomorrow. Having faith in her: So brave, so patient, so empathetic, so caring, so funny, so at peace, so curious, so eager, so cheeky, so smelly, so humble, so philosophical, so Zen, so easy going, so deep, so avatar, so old soul, so gifted, so ready to teach and so ready to learn. Courage, courage, courage on the grandest scale. Seeing the mountains already moved out of the way with nothing more than a cheeky grin, laugh and burp and it is only 9am!
Is the world ready?? It is more than ready, it has been waiting for her; I have been waiting for her. This is it. The dawn of a new era, do not worry about Donald Trump and the impact of stupidness set upon the human race! Hold hands and leap of the Praecipes. Let this angel who lives among us guide and band together all of the feathers represented by kind hearts to a place of knowing, belonging and well-being. I hear you Eve. I hear you every minute of every day. In your silence, in your meditations and I am ready. Hope you are world.
That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about seeing people flourish - among many other things - which is one of the reasons that Eve’s program is suited to me. I have a burning desire to help this beautiful little human become all that she was created to be!
What attracted you to join Evie’s Son-Rise Program?
This job was a gift from God - I had never even thought about working with special needs children until I saw advertisements for Eve’s program online. Reading through the information I was filled with joy and just knew that this was something that I needed to be a part of! Another thing that attracted me to working with Eve was the intense desire to grow and learn more about myself and about the world around me.
How has working with Evie helped you?
Working with little Eve has grown and stretched me in so many ways and will continue to do so for the rest of my time on earth – even beyond my working with Eve. It has challenged my everyday attitude toward life and my awareness of myself; of my own feelings, thoughts and beliefs. This has been and will continue to be unspeakably empowering!! The kinds of lessons that I have learnt will always be with me.
In what ways are you able to help Evie?
Working with and knowing Eve: Change shall come from the heart and soul, development of her body in the overflow! I can help Eve to live in fullness by living in fullness myself, and opening myself up to new opportunities everyday: by choosing to be wildly courageous and willing to try new things that will further my development as a person and therefore her development within the program!
What is one of your favourite times you shared with Evie and why?
My favourite moment in time with Eve is always the moment when she’s finished in the bathroom and races you back to the playroom. We get halfway down the hall and at the exact same point, almost every single time, she turns her little head around and looks into your eyes with so much energy and love and excitement! In that moment I am always reminded of Eve’s limitless potential and how blessed I am to be working with her!!
Is there one personal learning that you would like to share with others?
The most enriching and rewarding lesson that I’ve learnt working with Eve has been that Happiness is a choice. This is a book written by the wonderful Barry Neil Kaufman that we were required to read during our training. It has changed my life and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!
What are your favourite sayings/quotes?
I told Eve that I’m looking to attend a school in America for 9 months around the middle of 2017 and later in the session she dragged me back to the table and wrote “I don’t want you to move away” & “I will miss you.” This really confirmed an understanding of the beautifully life-changing work that is taking place in her playroom every day and that my sacrifice is worth it.
What is one reason that autism is a gift to you?
Autism is a blessing to me because I’ve learnt about love from a whole new perspective and I believe that everything in life is about love. Ultimately, I believe that this love comes straight from Heaven and that it is our duty as humans to live our live in such a way so as to steward this love and gift it to anyone and everyone that can.
